A Brief Primer on Airsoft Gun Laws

You should have a good understanding of the laws surrounding airsoft guns if you have an interest in this sport. In the United States, the laws differ from state to state. Federal regulations though state that all airsoft guns must have orange tips to distinguish them from real guns. This is because there have been occasions where airsoft guns have been used in criminal behaviour like robberies. The orange tip should stop police from shooting at someone with an airsoft gun because they thought it was real. This can be a very easy and fatal mistake as airsoft guns are normally modelled after real guns.

Airsoft stated in Japan in the 1980s. In Japan, it is a crime to possess a firearm. Therefore, gun collectors developed the airsoft gun as an alternative to the real thing. The airsoft gun craze caught on throughout the world and soon became part of the sport of the same name. On the playing field, airsoft is just like paintball in that there are intricate scenarios, simulations and games with various rules played by teams. The difference is that airsoft uses pellets instead of paintballs. These pellets can certainly cause harm and injury, which is why adhering to local laws and safety regulations are so important.

In most developed countries, airsoft is a recognised sport which is legal and regulated. For example, there are portions of New York, Michigan, San Francisco and Washington DC where airsoft guns are prohibited. The United States has no law regarding pellet velocity. It is most important to not only make sure your barrel is bright orange, but that you are following the safety rules of the field on which you are playing. One of the most important of all rules enforced by most every playing field is that proper safety gear must be worn at all times.

You should always use safety equipment, the most important being a helmet with eye protection. Regular sunglasses will not suffice as they cannot withstand a hit from a high velocity pellet and do not offer proper side protection. Some people wear bodily protection, others don't. It's probably a good idea as the pellets can possibly bruise or break the skin. By adhering to your local airsoft gun laws and following all applicable safety regulations, you can make sure this sport is both safe and enjoyable.
